“Full coverage” means that you, as a driver, are legally insured (with at least state required Liability coverage) and that you have physical damage coverage for your car. It is commonly called full coverage but isn't something you can check off on a quote sheet.
Physical damage in car insurance is Comprehensive and Collision and is optional coverage; not all people need it or choose it. Typically, people with newer cars and/or cars with lease or car payments get it.
· Comprehensive coverage is for your car when it is damaged by things “other than collision” such as theft, fire, vandalism and for hitting a deer or other animals.
· Collision coverage is for your car when it is damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object, such as a guardrail, mailbox or tree.
This optional coverage has Deductibles. A deductible is the money you agree to pay out-of-pocket before the insurance company pays toward a claim from a loss or damage. For example, if your deductible is $500, and repairs from an auto accident are $800, you'll be responsible for paying the first $500. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium but sometimes the difference between $500 and $1000 deductibles is not that great. Ask to quote both if you’re thinking about the $1000 deductible.
Other coverages are available, but not required, in full coverage too; for instance, towing and rental reimbursement. Bottom line, make sure you know what you’re getting. We someone come to us because he got “full coverage” from a car dealer from a major insurer. He thought it was a good rate, then he found out later he had $2000 deductibles! Best to shop your insurance before you buy the car and know what you’re getting.
