It’s Veterans Day and we appreciate all our Veterans of the Armed Services. On this day to honor those who have served we want to say a special thank you for your service and take a quiet moment to remember all those who have paved the way for freedom throughout the decades of the past. We are also proud of our family’s service from WW1 to the present.
Regarding car insurance, there are some companies that will give you discounts for your service. They may have requirements to qualify for the discount such as an honorable discharge or proof of deployment. Some car insurance carriers will treat you as if you’ve maintained your insurance coverage when you were deployed and recently came home (with what’s often called a proof of prior insurance” discount; it can be significant). Some carriers will apply the discount to the family, some to only the veteran. If the truth be known, more companies do not give a “veterans discount” but that doesn’t mean their rates won’t be competitive for you (each insurance company sets their own rules, discounts and requirements for coverage which can also vary by state). As you get auto insurance quotes, ask for the discount so if the car insurance agent shops for your best rate he/she can include it when available.

A side note to consider is more about the car, itself. Full coverage rates vary greatly by vehicle. When shopping for cars to purchase with payments, remember it’s not only the price of the car and the loan interest rate that matter; comparison shop for the different vehicles car insurance rates also. There can be a wide price difference between one vehicle and the next as well as one insurer and the next. Pay attention to the amount of coverage you obtain and your deductibles. We’ve seen a $1000 deductible save some people a mere $5 a month over a $500 deductible. We’ve also seen it save a lot. Again, everything varies so make sure you check out your options. Ask the car dealers for all their military discounts too!
The best practices for getting the most car insurance discounts are:
§ Ask
§ Keep your coverage active and finish out your policy terms before going to new coverage
§ If you own multiple vehicles, keep them on the same policy to get the multi-car discount, this includes with your spouse or significant other, if applicable
§ You can check into putting your home, cars, RVs, ATVs, motorcycles together with the same carrier (sometimes it saves money, sometimes not)
§ Your credit matters so keep it as good as possible
§ Keep good records organized. You’ll need to provide documentation of your name, rank and dates of service to the insurance company for most military discounts.
Veterans do themselves a favor by asking for the discount whether it’s car insurance, cars, restaurants, or other businesses. Plus, it’s a way for businesses to honor your service!
