Did your Mom ever give you any sage advice? Some of it was to store in our memory bank so we’d hear it later in life as we were attempting to make some questionable decisions. If you need a refresher or this inspires you to think of others, here are a few you might have heard. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there and to the people who celebrate and/or miss them.
“Treat others like you want to be treated.”
It's the Golden Rule. If you didn't hear it quite like this, maybe it was something more along the lines of: "Be nice. You never know who could end up being your boss." Either way, Mom was right. Don’t be a bully, don’t do things out of spite. You should be nice to just about everybody, this includes while driving. Remember, maybe you’ll cut someone off by accident one day and need the same consideration. Better safe than sorry (that might be another thing she said…).
“Listen to your gut.”
We can all look back to a time or two when we made the right choice by not doing something. We can also probably look back to a time or two when we knew we weren’t making the right choice, but we did it anyway. Usually, these decisions led to bigger regrettable messes. Mom was right, and maybe we’d be better off if we paid attention to our instincts.
“I’d Rather You Call Me at 2 AM for a Ride Than Drink and Drive”
Calling your mom and asking for a ride was probably last thing you wanted to do as a buzzed teenager leaving a party. But even worse than seeing her station wagon pull up to your friend's house was the thought of calling her even later from a holding cell in the local police station. Mom was absolutely right about this one and it is way better to be safe than sorry.
“Always wear shoes when you drive.”
"You never know when you're going to break down!" On the rare occasion that you decide to get in your car and drive away without wearing shoes, remember what your Mother said. Don’t drive without your shoes. Even if you don’t break down, you won’t be able to pull over and grab a drink or snack from a local convenience store or get gas (even though you listened when she said to never let your tank get below half full, right?). And what fun is life as if you can’t pull over whenever you want and get a snack?
What is the favorite thing your Mom or Mom-person told you? Have you told anyone else the same thing? Celebrate the important folks in your life!
