Comprehensive Vs. Collision
These are coverages for your car (also called physical damage). Typically, when people have these two optional coverages they refer to them as “full coverage.” These are the coverages that would cover damage to your vehicle (minus deductible and per the policy terms).
What’s the difference? In a nutshell…running into objects is collision, the rest may fall under comprehensive.
Comprehensive Insurance: covers damages from an "act of God," or events that are not caused by a car colliding with other objects. An "act of God" can include things like damage from a heavy tree branch falling on your car (since you have no control over when or why a tree branch would fall on your car).
Here are types of damages covered Under Comprehensive
- Natural disasters: storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, hailstorms
- Fire, civil commotions, explosions
- Vandalism and theft
- Damage from impacts with animals, such as a deer (actually hitting the animal, not avoiding the poor thing)
- Broken or shattered windows and windshield
- Falling objects
Collision Insurance: covers damages from crashing into other vehicles, objects or fixed structures
(think accidents and mishaps like fender-benders)
Here are types of damages covered Under Collision
- You crash into another car, or another car crashes into you while you're parked
- You drive into a stationary object, such as a tree, streetlight, or mailbox
- You crash into a ditch or a pothole
- Your car flips over
- A hit-and-run (if you don't have uninsured motorist property coverage, varies by State)
Another way to look at it the difference between Comprehensive and Collision is, to a certain degree, to consider the factor of the car driver's control.
For example, let's say it’s the aftermath of a hurricane or tornado:
With a storm, two events might happen:
· 1. a heavy tree branch falls on your car, or
· 2. you swerve to avoid a falling tree branch and crash into a tree.
In the first event, you had no control over when or why a tree branch would fall on your car. This kind of claim falls under your comprehensive. In the second option, you were driving the car and you ultimately swerved into the tree, even though not on purpose, which makes it a collision.
